On Akka’s Shore
Umma Hamido’s On Akka’s Shore is an audio visual artistic reflection of one person’s journey from a Palestinian Refugee Camp to London.
2 November 2017, 7.30pm. £8/£6 concessions.
Toynbee Studios, 28 Commercial Street, E1 6AB, London
Jaz was diagnosed with schizophrenia and has had repeated mental hospital admissions since his early twenties. Coming from a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, he and his rap group sought asylum in the UK in 2013. Jaz is an old friend of Umama’s from Lebanon. She met him again in London when he was last sectioned and started documenting their encounters.
On Akka’s Shore uses audio and visual recordings to draw a journey which slips between London where Jaz currently lives, a Palestinian refugee camp where he was born, and Acre, his city of origin in Palestine. It captures Jaz’s persona as a poet who drifts away from the real, into a fictional world of hallucinations, reflecting an eternal destiny of seeking refuge.
