‘All In The Same Boat’ is a new piece of collaborative storytelling created by Lost City Writers, an international group of emerging writers who first met on the MA in Playwriting And Screenwriting at City University.
This is our third group show and we decided to try and tackle the subject of the ongoing refugee crisis from a historical perspective. We talked about the fact that people have become refugees throughout human history, and created characters to represent different eras and crises. Once we’d chosen our characters – a passenger on The Mayflower, a Polish Battle Of Britain pilot, a Syrian musician, a young girl caught in the Biafran War, a Brit fleeing the flooding of future England, and the daughter of Ugandan restaurant owners – we went away and wrote their stories.
When we reassembled we put those characters and their stories in a small boat, to find out how they got on together and to see what they would tell us. We were surprised and moved by the results – what we came up with was a mixture of comedy, drama, politics and personal that all came together by the end in a message which none of us predicted but which made complete sense.
Our director, Natalie Denton, has put together an exciting cast of six actors who be playing both the six refugees and the supporting characters in each of their stories. The show will be performed on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 November at Oxford House Theatre in Bethnal Green. Hope to see you there!
