Welcome Presents – PRIDE in collaboration with Say It Loud Club


Welcome Cinema + Kitchen is a monthly film screening and supper club – uniting Londoners of different backgrounds through Film, Food & Friendship.

FILM: PRIDE is inspired by the extraordinary true story of the unlikely solidarity between LGBTQ activists and striking miners in 1980s Wales. It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.

FRIENDS: Following the film, we are so excited to host a panel discussion featuring:

– Mike Jackson of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, the solidarity group featured in PRIDE

– Aloysius Ssali, Ugandan LGBTQA+ advocate and founder of the Say It Loud Club – a community support group for LGBTQA+ refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

– Tauhida Ali, representative of Say It Loud Club

– Tommy Fitzer, Welcome Presents co-Founder and Welcome Kitchen Coordinator

-Sophie Amili, an evaluator and researcher focusing on sexuality and borders in development, particularly in the Middle East. Sophie currently heads up the Gender and Social Inclusion team at Coffey International Development.

FOOD: Welcome Kitchen will cook and serve authentic home cooking from over 5 countries across Africa and the Middle East. This month it will be a vegan feast!
