Are you a professional writer? Are you passionate about using creative writing and the power of words to help survivors of torture have a voice?
Freedom From Torture have an exciting opportunity for two people to volunteer as Mentors/Workshop Facilitators for our unique creative writing group, ‘Write to Life’, located at their London Centre.
For the past 20 years Freedom from Torture has developed Write to Life, into a thriving creative writing group with existing and former clients, all of whom are survivors of torture. Write to Life has successfully supported hundreds of clients in creative writing sessions held on a one to one and group workshop basis; many have gone on to be published writers and assured performers at festivals, fundraisers and public events.
Although primarily a writing group, that writing has taken many forms, from film to musical narrative to theatre, and now exploring comedy. Write to Life has also collaborated on creative projects with the Roundhouse, Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert and British Museums, NWLive Arts, Ice&Fire and Tamasha Theatre, amongst others.
They have also recently begun to publish a Zine, in digital and hard copy. Mentors will be expected to take turns in co-editing the Zine, alongside a group member. Freedom from Torture is a survivor-focused and led organisation, and they’re keen that group members be encouraged to co-facilitate and plan workshops.
Closing date for applications: 1 August 2021
